Rani Mukerji to do the lavani dance for Aiyaa

Rani Mukerji is going all out to stay true to her character in Sachin Kundalkar's Aiyya - a middle class Maharashtrian girl.

Apart from dressing the part and learning the language, Rani will also perform a traditional lavani dance in the film. Choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant, the lavani will be performed on a track called Aga Bai.

A source working on the film reveals, "The song is as authentic as a lavani can get, with cheeky lyrics, et al. Rani will be wearing a bright navvari (nine yard) saree and will also sport a nathni (nose ring) and other accessories that traditional lavani dancers wear. Vaibhavi is very excited as this is the first time she's choreographing such a number. She has watched the Marathi film Natrang, which had some popular lavani numbers, to get a hang of it."

Aiyya has Rani opposite South actor Prithviraj, who is making his Bollywood debut with the film. The source adds, "The song has been recorded but is yet to be shot. The unit was shooting a romantic number at the Sir JJ School of Arts a few days back, so the lavani will be shot in the next schedule."

Meanwhile, Rani is not only watching Marathi films but also plans to meet actual lavani dancers to understand the dance form and the nuances they adopt. "Since Sachin is Maharashtrian and has been associated with theatre, he plans to make the lavani look as authentic as possible. A few dancers in the city will also be shown the song once it's done to make sure it's true to the original style."

Says Sachin, "Rani is very dedicated and is going all out to play a Maharashtrian girl. She is very excited about doing the lavani and we've been watching a couple of black and white Marathi films, which had authentic lavani dances for reference. Rani has also done a couple of workshops to learn the language and mannerisms of playing a Maharashtrian girl in the film."
