Ash is the hero: Vikram

Vikram, who makes his debut alongside Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the three versions of Raavan in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu (the dubbed version), got to share the most daunting experiences in the jungles of Kerala including dancing high above water-level on very slippery rocks.

Says Vikram, “Yes, it was quite an experience. I’m a good fighter, but not quite the dancer. I’ve always felt that Madhuri Dixit was the best dancer ever. But then, I saw how Aishwarya held her own in Devdas. I thought it was fantastic. So, while shooting for Raavan, I just forgot my own steps and kept staring. Every hero from the south wants to work with her at some point in his career. I got my opportunity finally. It’s wonderful that I’m making my Hindi debut with her. It’s strange how every Miss World and Miss Universe enters movies. But who has had the lingering impact of Aishwarya? She has some kind of an enduring aura. Over the years, she has really evolved as an actor.”

Vikram says Aishwarya is a hero in Raavan. “There are three main characters, Abhishek, Aishwarya and me. I’ve done a lot of tortuous sequences in the past. But this one takes the cake and the ache. And Aishwarya suffered all the wounds, pain, fever and insect bites heroically in the forest. For all the dangerous scenes, she hardly ever used a dupe. She was totally up to the task, though she fell ill quite a few times.”

Playing Aishwarya’s noble husband in the Hindi version and then the dark outlaw who kidnaps her in Tamil was not easy for Vikram. “And we had to do it in two consecutive shots,” he explains, “It was very exciting for me. When you see Raavan in two languages, you wouldn’t recognise me as the same person in both. I had to change my body language and look completely. Even in Anniyan, I tried various looks. It comes from my drama background in school.”

Mani Ratnam has shot four climax sequences for Raavana. Which one will he choose?

Director Mani Ratnam started shooting Raavana in 2007 and today, he is still not sure how to end his film. Still undecided over what makes an apt climax for the film, he is flitting between four options. He has shot four potential climaxes in Malshej, but no one on the set knows which one he is likely to go with.

A source from the unit said, “The first ending has Raavana winning over Sita (Aishwarya Rai). Another option is that she goes the conventional way and returns to Ram.” The third and fourth options make life easier for Mani: either Ram dies or Raavana meets his end. So, that closes one door for Sita and she is less burdened by the choice.

Perhaps Mani doesn’t want to court controversy and hence, he is, literally speaking, keeping his options open. Having fallen prey to controversy in the past with films like Bombay, where religion was a touchy issue, maybe he hopes that with time, he will be able to arrive at a well thought out conclusion.

Will the Hindi and the Tamil version have the same climax? Who knows? Maybe Abhishek Bachchan, who plays Raavana in the Hindi version, will live happily ever after with Aishwarya Rai, like in real life.

The spokesperson of the film said, “ The climax has already been shot. In fact, Abhishek has finished dubbing too.”

Raavan becomes Raavanan in Tamil

It’s official Mani Ratnam’s Ravanaa in Hindi will be titled as Raavanan in Tamil.

The Tamil version has Vikram, Aiswarya Rai and Prithviraj in the lead with Priyamani, Prabhu, Karthik and Munna in supporting roles.

Raavanan had an earlier working title Asoka Vanam in Tamil and has music by AR Rahman, with ace cameraman Santosh Sivan as the cinematographer.

The audio launch of Ravanaa and Raavanan will take place in the last week of April in Mumbai and Chennai respectively after Rahman comes back from his world tour.

Both the versions of the film are scheduled to release simultaneously on June 18, worldwide.

Bomb blasting Mani

Mani Ratnam, the impeccable director we know, has gone another step to prove his eye for detail.

Mani Ratnam, on the sets of ‘Raavan’ that is almost complete, shot a risky scene along with the stunt director, Sham Kaushal who worked on every aspect of the scene to come out well.

Inspired by a real life incident that happened to Mani Ratnam, he wanted a similar scene with a petrol bomb that blasts while the lead pair Aishwarya Rai and Vikram walk in front of it.

The scene was such that the bomb blasts in mid-air, just before it lands on the ground. The actors were only 15 feet before the point of landing, and Vikram and Aishwarya had agreed to do the risky scene as Mani thought would appear great on screen.

Once the risky scene was over, Mani was happy with the end product and congratulated the actors and Sham Kaushal for the dedication.

This is not the first time Mani Ratnam has tried something risky, even during the shooting of ‘Bombay’ and escaped from an accident.

With so much effort being put in the movie, let us hope nothing else bombs!

Cannes Premiere for ‘Raavan’

Earlier it was said Mani Ratnam will premiere his ‘Raavan’ at the IIAFA Awards in Seoul later this year. But now the news is that the ace director is going to France with his lead artistes to premiere ‘Raavan’ at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Sourced also said Mani will premiere the Hindi original version of ‘Raavan’ on May 14 at the festival. Abhishek, Aishwarya, and Vikram who are the lead players in the Hindi versions are also expected to travel to Cannes to participate at the festival.

Few days ago Mani Ratnam had officially announced that the music of his buzzing film will be launched in April and the movie will release in June.

Is Prithviraj a Jihadi lover?

The big question being asked in film circles is whether Prithviraj’s Amal Neerad directed Anwar about “Love Jihad”?

Love Jihad, was widely reported in coastal Kerala and Karnataka where young handsome Muslim boys reportedly targeted college girls belonging to non-Muslim communities for conversion to Islam by feigning love.

Last year the matter created a furore in Kerala after various “investigative reports” in the media highlighted it. Finally the Kerala High Court had to intervene and ask the state police and Union Home Ministry to probe the matter.

The buzz is that the thread of Amal’s Anwar is based on “Love Jihad” with Prithviraj playing a Muslim youth Anwar who lures Mamta a non-Muslim and converts her and later makes her join his terrorist outfit.

Prakashraj will play a deadly cop Stalin who heads the anti-terrorist squad who is on a mission to uncover the “Love Jihad” operations of terrorists. The others in the cast are Lal, Saikumar, Geetha and a few other Pathan looking villains from Bollywood.

The shooting of Anwar started last week in Kochi. Prithviraj himself has told a Malayalam magazine that Amal has discussed everything about the film and it would be the director’s best film till date that will tackle a social issue.

During the first schedule of the film, Prithviraj got injured while doing some deadly action scenes

'Anwar' will be Amal Neerad's best film: Prithviraj

Young superstar Prithviraj who is currently shooting for Amal Neerad's 'Anwar' in Cochin has very high hopes for the film.

"Amal has discussed almost everything about the film with me. Though almost every film claims that it has a social responsibility, this is one film that actually deals with such an issue," Prithvi said in his interview with a prominent film magazine.

"Anwar would be Amal Neerad's best film as yet. I wouldn't say that this would offer the viewer an experience that he has never had till now. But I can guarantee that this would be a really good film," Prithvi added.

"What is wrong for me might be right for you, and viceversa. The film would be an analysis of these rights and wrongs based on facts. 'Anwar' would be a fresh expercnce, because it is a suspense stopry that realistically views certain human conditions," the actor concluded.

Thanthonni - Is not up to the hype

Thanthonni Movie Review : Thanthonni - Is not up to the hype

Imitation and recreation had been definitely one of the ways to emerge into better creative results. Believing in this notion, the creators of the mass masala movie ‘Thanthonny’ have did their very best to indulge in copy pasting many sequences of the hit movies of the past to create a potpourri, reminding us of many bigger hits like Basha, Usthad to Devasuram. Even with this shortcomings that boost predictability factors, the movie has its moments, which may qualify it into an above average run at the Box Office.

The movie has Prithviraj as a rebel hero, even in his own big joint patriarchal family named Valiyaveettil which boasts of a current generation of IAS officers, IPS officer and even a state minister. Prithvi is 'Kochukunju', who is the spoilt grandson of Kochousepph and only son of Kathrina, whose three big brothers are in control of the family affairs.

He has a mysterious past when he was thrown out of his home to roam around in the north, and to return home only after a decade. Within an hour into the proceedings we are let known that Kochukunju is not a spoilt brat but a dogooder who holds a big secret, which makes him behave like that in the open.

The entire first half is devoted to build up the hero, his fancies, punchlines ,his romance and even a favourite song. Kochukunju repeatedly skips the family meeting to divide their ancestral shares. He has to prove something to everyone including his wealthy uncles, who had done something reckless in the past to make his life in turmoil.

What is that big secret deal and how Kochukunju finds ways to prove himself, forms the rest of the movie.

Prithviraj tries his level best to be in the shoes of actors like Mohanlal, even attempting to do some lighter sequences and comic dialogues, but with limited success. Sheela as the heroine Helen, who is after Kochukonju doesn't have much to show than her skimpy costumes, while the rest of the cast including Ambika, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Captain Raju, Ramu, Sureshkrishna and Sadiq have limited space to do anything significant. P Vasu, Jagathy and Saikumar appear in cameos which won't do much favour to the narratives.

T A Shahid's scripts has some interesting dialogues interspersed in between, but struggles most of the time to strike a balance between heroism and emotions. The presentations that boasts of 4200 windmills and 1500 crores of assets definitely demanded much seasoned ways and actors to handle, at least for the Malayalam audience who always looks for logic in between lines.

More illogical is the attempt of the members from a 1500 crore family, to sell it out to secure 300 crores to invest in a harbour project. The way to the climax is very predictable with not so engaging fight sequences. Debutant director George Vargese has packed the movie with Shajikailash-Renjithian styles of presentation but also fails to cover up the shortcomings in the scripts.

Sajith Menon's camera work is also mediocre while Bijith Bala has tried ways to cut it to slick sequencing. Tej Mervin's songs are average with one ''Kaatu Paranjathum'' which offers a soulful hearing.

With an age old formula that had done the trick to many superstars of present day cinema, Prithviraj would have liked an easy walkover with similar powerful packaging. But that is where the movie falters. With illogical narratives which find it harder to win hearts and believe about a 25 year old billionaire, ‘Thanthonny’ will not qualify for those who demand a fresher construct or repeated viewing.

Prescribed exclusively for the die hard fans of the rebel star of Mollywood.
