Manirathnam completes ‘Raavana’

Finally, the long term project of Manirathnam’s bilingual movie ‘Raavana’ has been completed. The vivacious filmmaker had to go through the journey bounded with lots of impedimenta through trials and tribulations. Continuous problems persisted throughout the film’s shooting schedules.

Nonetheless, withstanding all the obstacles, filming has been completed now. According to the sources, merely a song is pending to be canned with Aishwarya Rai in January. Recently, a grand party was reported to had taken place where the star-casts of both Hindi and Tamil were present.

So, who does our director liked the most in this film? An unpredicted person has seemingly enchanted Manirathnam and he’s none other than Govinda, who does the role of forest officer in Hindi version. According to the film’s storyline, he leads Vikram through the deep forests of saving his wife Aishwarya Rai who has been kidnapped by Abhishek Bacchan.

Kerala Café : Review By Moviebuzz

Movie
Kerala Cafe

Director
10 directors

Producer

Renjith

Cast
Mammootty, Dileep, Suresh Gopi, Pritviraj, Jagathy, Salim Kumar

Kerala Café has ten directors at the helm, each of them making a film of their own on a single theme called yathra or journey.

Kerala Café, for your info, is in fact a modest tea stall at a railway station and certain characters from each of the films are somehow connected to it. It's a nice concept, perhaps inspired by movies like Paris, je t'aime for instance, but the best thing about it is that the directors have held it together with some excellent ones and some okay efforts.

Among the ten films, it is perhaps Anjali Menon's Happy Journey that stands out with its intelligent use of the allotted time. A heartening, simple tale has been well told by the director. The film is set inside a bus with an insurance surveyor (Jagathy Sreekumar) with a roving eye, trying to make advances on a pretty girl (Nithya Menon) sitting next to him. But she turns out to be really smart for the man to handle.

Director Anwar Rasheed's Bridge talks about two parallel tracks, the first one involving a young boy and his pet kitten. The other story has a son (Salim Kumar), who lives in poor surroundings, deciding to leave his ailing mother (Shanthadevi) in the street. With amazing technical brilliance, the director takes things to an altogether different level and stamps his presence quite effectively.

Makal, directed by Revathy, is about the flesh trade which is happening under the guise of adoption. Sona Nair and Sreenath have done the main roles. Some of its situations are predictable, yes, but it has its moments and that hugely works to the film's advantage.

Puram Kazhchakal, directed by Lal Jose, is based on C V Sreeraman's book and narrates a bus journey where people of different mindsets, purpose and nature go along for a while. Mammootty and Sreenivasan play the main characters in it. Mammootty looks quite subtle and different from his normal self and as it happens, surprises everyone with the final shot. We start a journey back from then on in our own minds and that is exactly what the film intends to convey.

The main attraction about director Uday Ananthan's Mrityunjayam could be its genre, horror. It has some mystery surrounding an old illam and despite the warnings of the tirumeni (Thilakan), a young journalist (Fahadh Faasil) comes there for an investigative story. Anoop Menon, Meera Nandan and Rima Kallingal are also part of the proceedings. There are some loose ends but here is a film that looks different from the rest and catches the viewers' attention quite easily.

We profile Anjali Menon

Nostalgia, directed by M.Padmakumar and based on R Venugopal's poem Nattuvazhikal, zooms in on a typical NRI. Johny (Dileep) is all nostalgic about his motherland when he is in Dubai but once he reaches Kerala, he is an altogether different man, cribbing for virtually everything that comes his way and that sadly includes his parents as well. Navya Nair plays his wife. One gets the feeling that the director has gone for a conventional format to narrate the story here, without going for some cinematic experiments.

Debutant director Shankar Ramakrishnan's Island Express looks again at the real-life Perumon tragedy involving the train that happened in 1988, but still remains as a scar in the minds of every Malayali. Prithviraj, Jayasurya,Rahman, Maniyanpillai Raju and Sukumari include the film's cast. The story meanders along in some strange ways initially but the director manages to get his act together towards the end.

Shaji Kailas' Lalitham Hiranmayam is about the angst of a married man played by Suresh Gopi, who falls in love with another girl. Jyothirmayee does the role of his wife while Dhanya Mary is the other woman in question. This is a simple tale, narrated with a lot of style, in true Shaji Kailas style.

Shyamaprasad's Off Season has been made to be seen on a lighter vein and has Suraj Venjarammood in the lead, as a tourist guide in Kovalam. He reminisces about the tryst with a Portuguese couple, who had not much money with them to spend during a vacation. The film gives a lot of promise in the beginning, but things are not happening in a great way, from then on.

B Unnikrishnan's Aviramam is about a couple, played by Siddique and Swetha Menon, who loves each other so dearly. But their lives take a drastic turn after recession hits the existence of his IT Company pretty badly. Though it has been made pretty well, the problem with the story is that it looks pretentious at times.

With a motley mix of stories, Kerala Café manages to stitch them together as an absorbing watch. There are shortcomings but here is one experiment done with some honesty, which is to be seen there on the screen. Among the highlights of the film are its technical brilliance, music quality and not to forget, the pace that never really allows the viewer to take their attention anywhere else. If there is a price to be given for the best short film of the lot, Anjali Menon’s Happy Journey is undoubtedly the pick of the lot followed by Anwar Rasheed's Bridge

The performances too help the film immensely with some sincere acting from the veterans in the business and some of the young faces, like the pretty Nithya Menon, Fahadh Faasil and Rima Kallingal. Watch out for some spectacular moments with Salim Kumar and Shanthadevi in Bridge, Jagathy Sreekumar in Happy Journey, Mammootty and Sreenivasan in Puram Kazhchakal, Jyothirmayee in Lalitham Hiranmayam, Sona Nair in Makal and Suraj Venjarammood in Off Season among others.

Get some popcorn and head straight for Kerala Café, which incidentally has been conceived and anchored by director Ranjith. It is a new experiment and not an easy one to execute as well. But those involved in its making have done a nice job and needs a pat on their back for just that. Go for it and you may not regret the idea for sure.

Verdict: Good

Kerala Cafe is a worthwhile experiment

Whenever the word experiment is used in films, we tend to take it with a pinch of salt because the word has been so abused that it has become synonymous with providing a slight tweak in the formula. So even when someone uses 'experiment' in the true sense of the word, we tend to be sceptical about it.

The same demons of doubt continue to pester us when we settle down to watch Kerala Cafe, director Ranjith's experimental venture featuring ten directors helming ten diverse stories all tied together by a common thread.

And the characters in these ten stories demand our attention. And, like all journeys, this film too leaves us with memories of a mixed variety -- happy, sad, humourous and even melancholy.

Beginning with M Padmakumar's Nostalgia, where a rich expatriate played by Dileep (he is working in the Middle East) longs for his homeland, but once there has only complaints. His character can be termed as the ultimate fence-sitter -- one who will not use his power to change things but go on complaining -- a self-centred and money-minded person.

The other theme that stands out in some of the stories is economic recession which has made life miserable for some people. We see it discussed in stories like Nostalgia, B Unnikrishnan's Aviramam and Shyamaprasad's Off Season.

Off Season is the only story that uses full on humour to convey the sufferings of people around the world due to economic recession. Kunjapai (Suraj Venjaramood) survives by doing odd jobs in Kovalam beach. He befriends a Portuguese couple expecting a windfall but later realises that they too are penniless backpackers who are in search of a job.

Meanwhile, the other stories like debutant Shankar Ramakrishnan's Island Express, Shaji Kailas' Lalthiamhiranmayam and Lal Jose's Puram Kazchakal are more personal narratives, which do not seem to have any connection with the happenings in the world.

A scene from Off SeasonIsland Express deals with the survivors of a train accident while Shaji Kailas' story starring Suresh Gopi , Jyothirmayee and Dhanya, deals with the emotional upheavals of a person entangled in a extra marital affair.

Anjali Menon's Happy Journey on the other hand, talks about the fear of terrorism in the mind of a common man. The movie stars Jagathy Sreekumar as a flirtatious insurance surveyor who is scared to death by a young girl (Nithya Menon) travelling with him in a bus. She pretends to be a terrorist carrying a bomb with her.

Makal directed by Revathy talks about the plight of a girl child born into an extremely poor family. It shows how she lands up in flesh trade on the pretence of being adopted by a rich couple.

Anwar Rasheed's Bridge is striking as it draws parallels between street animals and the aged. This simple story shows the love of a small boy for a kitten that he has found on the road, and the struggle of a slum dweller who finds it difficult to take care of his mother.

Mrityunjayam, Uday Ananthan's horror story which supposedly deals with the recklessness of youth, cannot find any link with the other stories. It seems to be there only because it is in the horror genre, so as to show that Kerala Cafe covers every theme.

But on the whole, Kerala Cafe proves to be a worthwhile experiment deserving a dekko.

Meera in ‘Pokkiri Raja’

Meera Jasmine always had a shaky and irregular career in every film industries of the South. A talented actress who had even won a National award, she had been reported as a problem artist in some sets. But the immense powers house of emoting talents in her had helped her for a comeback, whenever she was sent off for petty reasons from any south Indian language.

Thus Meera who had some rifts with the artist associations and filmmakers of Malayalam had been keeping away from Mollywood, working with her projects in Telugu and Kannada. The actress who has recently returned to Mollywood to shoot for the new Rajeev Anchal movie, tentatively titled as ‘Paattinte Paalazhy’ has been approached for the heroine role in the new Mammootty movie ‘Pokkiri Raja’. The actress is reported to have agreed to do the role, though for a high price.

The movie to be directed by debutante Vysakh Abraham will also feature Prithviraj in an important role.

Ravana shooting ends; Mani celebrates with party

Rains, mishaps, jungle safaris, delays – and what not! Looks like this Mani Ratnam’s magmas opus will go down the cine history for its longest shooting adventure.

And now, ‘Ravana’, this most anticipated movie, is said to have completed its shooting journey. The entire crew would have dropped down in a joyful relief now, we say! And to mark this occasion, Mani Ratnam and his wife Suhasini organized a party for the team. All is well that ends well! Insiders said that Mani sir praised highly of Bollywood star Govinda and his performance, which touched the surprised actor immensely.

At last the team can breathe in the modern civilization again…

Now to refresh you on the movie details – ‘Ravana’ is produced and directed by Mani Ratnam. It has a huge star cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Govinda, Prithviraj, Priyamani, Karthik and others. ‘Ravana’ is a bilingual, Hindi-Tamil, movie and loosely based on the Hindu epic ‘Ramayana’. Interestingly, the director has modified the story with a modern touch, making the villain a hero. That is, Vikram here plays the title character as Ravan.

The cinematography is handled by Santosh Sivan while music is done by Oscar winner A R Rahman.

What remains in the list for us is to just wait for this story to unfold on screens. Cross-fingers!

'Every Malayali should be proud of Kerala Cafe'

Director Shankar Ramakrishnan marks his debut with the film Island Express in Kerala Cafe, an anthology of ten stories with a common theme called Yathra (journey).

Prithviraj, Jayasurya, Rahman, Maniyanpillai Raju and Sukumari play the main leads in Island Express.

The director talks about his film and more in this exclusive interview to rediff.com's Meghna George.

How do you feel making your debut as part of Kerala Cafe?

Actually this was not planned. I have been a part of Capitol theatre, Ranjith's outfit, for the last seven years. After Kaiyoppu and Thirakkadha, both of which were well appreciated, we were actually thinking about what to do next.

We wanted to do something different that will take this platform into the next level. So we had this idea and we discussed with some of our friends like Lal Jose, for instance.

At that time, it was supposed to be directed by a set of directors, including Ranjith. That night itself, he told me that he will produce the film and will be the main architect behind the whole concept. I came into the picture as a director. For me, this was both a responsibility and an honour.

Meanwhile I got busy as an associate director in Ranjith's Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Kadha, which was a big project and as a result, I was one among the last, to complete my film in Kerala Cafe.

What is Island Express about?

Island Express has been inspired by a true incident. It is about four different people from various strata of the society, who belong to various socio-political-economic and emotional backgrounds.

Though there is no convergence between them, yet inadvertently there is a strong connection.

There are four women and four men, played by Prithviraj and Thani (a hugely talented theatre artist), Jayasurya and Sukumari, Maniyanpillai Raju and Shelley (an award-winning television actor) and Rahman and Geethu Christie (a beauty pageant winner).

How is the story connected to Kerala Cafe, the tea stall at the railway station?

All I can reveal is that Jayasurya plays an army officer who is in transit and he comes to Kerala Cafe.

What was the experience of narrating a story within ten minutes?

Whether a film is short or a feature length one, it has to reach a specific target within a stipulated time frame. Of course, you can add your spice into it and that needs a heavy craft.

In Island Express I have done experiments with time and pace. While the story involving Prithviraj has an urban feel, the one involving Jayasurya has a familial frame. The story involving Maniyanpillai Raju was kind of whacky while that of Rahman has an imaginative tone. In the film, the four things will converge into real time and pace.

How excited are you about the movie?

I had gone to Abu Dhabi, where the film was screened. Almost sixty percent of the viewers were those related to films abroad and the rest were NRIs.

The response to the film was just overwhelming. This is the first time in India that a collective film with a common theme, has been made.

A great teamwork has gone into its making -- more than 2000 technicians have worked on it. Every Malayali should be proud of Kerala Cafe.

Prithviraj is jet set to become a Thanthonny

Malayalam movie Thanthonny by debutant director George Varghese with the young star Prithviraj in the lead will commence shooting in Ernakulam. The movie also features Saikumar, Biju Menon, Jagathy Sreekumar, Lalu Alex, Captain Raju, Ambika, and Sadhique in prominent roles in the movie. With this movie the Mayabazaar fame Sheela will be back in the Malayalam film industry.

The movie is expected to throw light on the life of farmers who had migrated to the hilly regions years ago. It needs to be seen how far Prithviraj would be able to give a realistic portrayal of a rustic character.

Prithviraj has been in the news for allegedly refusing to play younger brother to Mohanlal in the upcoming Malayalam movie Christian Brothers. Thanthonny has its scripts by T A Shahid. T A Shahid has been away from the limelight for quite some time following the failure of the Mohanlal movie Alibhai at the box office. The movie will be produced by Visakha Films.

Udayabhanu after 40 years

Very few could have realised that the veteran singer K P Udayabhanu hadn't been in the playback singing business, for the last forty years. He had been such a popular and regular name in TV screens and with the programmes of ganamela troup “old is gold”, that everyone thought he was singing movie songs now and then, that may not have become hits.

Anyhow the curious story was public by the singer himself, when he came to the studio to record a song “Kattu Paranjathum..” written by T A Shahid for the movie ‘Thanthonny’. The last time I sang a Malayalam song was for the movie ‘Thalavattam’ that came in 1969. Till then I had been able to sing around 200 film songs, but some how I was not called to sing any film song for the last 40 years'' said Udayabhanu who sang the song for the movie under the guidance of young music director Tej Mervin.

Udayabhanu who worked with A I R for 38 years, had been extremely successful with the songs that he sung in the early part of his career, particularly for films like Kadathu Kaaran, Ramanan, and Ezhu Rathrikal.

‘Thanthonny’ which have Prithviraj in the lead, will also feature songs sung by Yesudas and Shankar Mahadevan.

No leak from Raavan: Rahman

The latest wave in the Internet is a supposed ‘leaked’ song from Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film titled Raavan.

The film, which stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles in the Hindi version and Vikram and Aishwarya in the Tamil version, has music by Oscar winner A R Rahman. According to a post in the internet recently, a song — titled Kaadale... in the Tamil version — has been sung by the lead actress Aishwarya herself!

However, music composer Rahman has denied that any such song features in the film. “Someone’s pulling a fast one,” is all he said. All eyes are on Raavan’s music as it will be the first album with the Mani Ratnam-Rahman combination that will be out after the composer’s double delight at the Oscars for Slumdog Millionaire. Besides Raavan, A R Rahman’s current projects include Rajinikanth’s Endhiran and Sultan, Couples Retreat and Vinaithaandi Varuvaaya.

Prithviraj is gearing up for a cosmopolitan film

Prithviraj is treading through unforeseen paths in search of his caliber as an artiste. He recently attended a press meet which was held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala and spoke at length about the Malayalam movie Veettilekkulla Vazhi by director Dr Biju. The movie has a cosmopolitan format and aims to relate with the audiences outside Kerala.

The actor spoke vibrantly and explained, "The biggest limitation of Malayalam cinema today is that our films are not cosmopolitan as they seldom cater to an audience outside Kerala. The only way we can overcome our language barrier is by making our films more cosmopolitan, by inculcating other cultures and languages and different themes. Veettilekkulla Vazhi is such a venture."

Prithviraj plays the role of a doctor at a jail hospital in Delhi, who sets out in search of the father of a child terrorist who breathes his last in the hospital. Indrajith will essay the role of the Tamil extremist in this movie. The filmmaker has got the inspiration for this movie from a piece of news which appeared in the dailies. It mentioned about the Indian Mujahideen recruiting people from Kerala.

Veettilekkulla Vazhi to be shot on Panavision format using sync sound will be a new experience for the audiences and the director claims "However, we are not trying to take any stand on extremism through this film. It is left to the audience to make their own opinions about what they see in the film." The movie will be shot in six different states across India.

Prithviraj : The New Superstar

A new follower after mammootty, Mohanlal & Suresh Gopi star trio

Prithviz first movie Nandanam was good in Boxoffice, again he has got hit films like Classmates, chocolates, satyam etc but the new Movie “Puthiya Mugham” has given him a new face in film world. Now a days his films are getting huge crowd than veteran superstars. People says “this is what we expected from him”

Directors like Maniratnam, Joshi & Shaji Kailas are making films with prithvi. Channels are eager to get satellite rights for his films. Yes people started calling him “SUPERSTAR”. A manly hero after Mammootty, Mohanlal and Sureshgopi

1) How do you feel now? “as a superstar”

I think it’s recognition for my hardwork. Its was not an easy task for me. I am getting this after a long time, now I have completed around 50 films. There were always people who degraded me while I tasted some incredible success in my filmy career, I mean to say after classmates and chocolate. But now I am really happy to see the new change.

2) How about the huge crowd in Theaters

Puthiyamugham is completely different and a high voltage film than other campus hits in mollywood. We have given precedence for actions and heroism. But the others were fully entertainers with comedy and family related subjects. The success of PM has been proven that there is big amount audience for such action films

My experiences make me / lead me to do action films, I saw a large crowd when I was in KAIRALI Theater to see the movie GULMOHAR. Later I came to know that one ALLU ARJUN movie is releasing that day.

3) After PM again an action film with Shaji Kailas, seems you are keen to do more action films?!!

It doesn’t matter how talented an actor is, to get a superstar position he has to do good action films. A common man having an imagination about their hero like fighting against injustice etc.

4) Did you feel to react while somebody deliberately doing against your movies, damaging your film posters etc.????!

My revenges were through my movies.Good movies always get rewarded, no one can beat it.

5) Do you think, it’s possible to tolerate them??

Who bother its their culture, I am sure my culture never allow me to do that….eg: damaging a poster etc.

6) Are you religious

Not that much, I do visit temples because I like the atmosphere, not only in temples I go churches, mosques, gurudwara etc, my trust is in humanbeing than god.
