Acting with Aishwarya is very difficult, says Raju

It was very difficult for me to act in combination scenes with Aishwarya Rai in 'Raavanan', says Prithviraj in a matter of fact way.

The reason? "You cannot keep looking at her and act. At the same time, it is not all easy to take your eyes off the stunning beauty," the young superstar, who plays her onscreen husband in the Mani Ratnam magnum opus says frankly.

Raju has a great opinion of the former beauty queen and the bahu of the Bachchan house. He says she is a very professional artiste and she managed to do the Hindi and Tamil versions one after the other everyday with astonishing ease.

For Raju, it was his long cherished dream to play the male lead in a Mani Ratnam film. He feels this film would give him a break similar to what Mammootty and Mohanlal gained from 'Thalapathi' and 'Iruvar' respectively.

Prithviraj says that acting under Mani Ratnam's guidance gave him many unforgettable experiences. He realised several new things about himself, new facets about his own personality while working for this film. He thinks this is the best an actor can say about one of his films.

Countdown - 18 days to Raavanan

Sify. com is starting a countdown to the eagerly awaited movie of the year Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan in Tamil.

The film is a tri-lingual in Hindi (Raavan) and Telugu (Villain). It is being marketed by Reliance Big Pictures and is scheduled to release worldwide in all three languages on June 18.

Raavanan features Vikram, Aishwarya Rai, Prithviraj in the lead along with Karthik, Prabhu and Priyamani in supporting roles. The music of AR Rahman is already a hit. The film is now being graded for colour correction in Adlabs in Mumbai by its cinematographer Santosh Sivan.

The tri-lingual is the most ambitious project of Mani Ratnam. In his director’s note, Mani Ratnam asks the question- Ten heads, Ten minds, A hundred voices- One Man. Did such a man ever exist…? Was he just a myth…or a metaphor…?

Are Ten Heads better than one…?
Is there a Ram inside Raavan ? And a Raavan inside each of us?
This along with its slick three minutes trailer has created a big buzz around the film. The audio launch of the film was done in style by Ratnam, which made the hype bigger as expectations have reached an all new high.

Well you will have to wait 18 days more for the big day when all three versions of the film will hit 2000 odd screens worldwide. We at sify, will be updating you on the biggest release in Indian cinema.

Top 5 movies : Pokkiri Raja still in the lead

As the producers association and distributors association are coming up with newer bans on Other Language films release and stars, the atmosphere is not found to be around perfect at Mollywood. The monsoon showers have also started a week earlier than expected, which is also starting to take its effect on the audience coming to theatres. The week though with not many fresh releases had a few changes in their list of biggies at the Box Office.

1. Pokkiri Raja - This double offer featuring Mammootty and Prithviraj in equally important roles, has been applauded even in its third week, which helped it to remain at the top of the charts. This stylish, loud and colourful movie from debutant Vysakh, made at a 6.5 crores budget is much full of mass masala ingredients that it still bringing 50-60 percent collections from release centres. Still continuing 69 centres in the state, the movie is said to make a gross of 11 crores and a share around five crores from its three weeks run.

2 Mummy and Me- Jeethu Joseph's ' Mummy and Me ' is gradually picking up, towards the end of the first week. The movie is taking into the collections of the other Sathyan movie on theatres. Featuring Urvashy and Archana Kavi in lead roles, this small budget film may break even, if marketed wisely.

3. Katha Thudarum - The Sathyan Anthikkad movie is not fetching enough family audiences as expected, though in all metros the movie is faring better. Now entering its fourth week, the movie may end up as a safe earner.

4 Pappy Appacha - As the movie is completing fifty days, this Dileep- Kavya starrer fares better than any of the recent Dileep movies. The colourful songs and the camaraderie of the lead pair have worked in favour of this movie by debutant Mamas. The movie is continuing in 17 centres in its sixth week.

5. In Ghost House Inn - Director Lal's sequel to ‘Harihar Nagar’ is faring well, though not up to the mark of its prequels. Also in the theatres are Mohanlal's 'Alexander the Great', which, as expected bombed at the box Office. One of the worst failures from Lal in recent times, the late promotions also seemed to have not worked well for the movie.

Raavanan for June 18

While Mani Ratnam's much expected 'Raavan' is getting ready to make a world wide release in 1000 centres, the Kerala viewer will have to idly wait for another two weeks to get the taste of the movie. As the Film Distributors association of Kerala has issued an ultimatum to theatre owners to keep away from fresh other language releases for two weeks from their date of release, the 100 centres in Kerala earlier earmarked for the movie will not screen 'Raavan ' till the end of June.

The Reliance films who is distributing ‘Raavan’ is already blacklisted by the association, for not yielding to their demands. The association had earlier issued a red card to Shibu of Thameens for releasing the Tamil masala movie ‘Sura’ recently in 118 centres. The association had also succeeded in deferring the release of Surya’s ‘Singam’ till next weekend. Anyhow it is observed that the 'Tuglak' reforms are expected to create more problems to the already ailing industry.

'Raavan' is publicized as the biggest ever movie from Mani Ratnam, with a base story inspired from Ramayanam. The movie will feature the script by the director while his wife, Suhasini will handle the dialogues. Santhosh Sivan is in charge of the camera while A R Rahman sets the music to the movie.

Raavanan Unloaded

When things are getting shot-up high on expectations with Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’, it has still got lots of post production works to be done. According to the sources, A.R. Rahman has now postponed his other projects and is vigorously working on background score.

It’s worth mentioning that Manirathnam is spending day and night at A.R. Rahman’s studio and the both have gone insomniac. Unlike other projects, A.R. Rahman is seemingly coming up with different scores for every version to savor for the tastes of regional audiences.

A.R. Rahman has been orchestrating the chorus parts from signers in United States and will complete the portions by first week of June. Sooner or later, academy award winner will travel all throughout the globe to promote the film since he has more values for his international recognition.

Asin & Prithviraj sizzle as Most Eligible Singles

Those around 20-something Asin (don’t you dare look disbelievingly, she is that young) have been making noises about her being the most eligible down South.

Perhaps that’s why she found a friend in Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni as well. Anyway some poll (the veracity of the numerous polls can never be established because God alone knows who the sample segment is) said gorgeous Asin was the most in-demand girl down South. Among the male stars, Prithviraj topped the poll alongside Asin. In the survey, 54 per cent males and 49 per cent females have voted for Asin and Prithviraj. The poll also saw names of 20 of the biggest stars down South including Shriya Saran, Genelia and Trisha.

MANI’S INSPIRATIONS AND OUR GUESS ON RAAVANAN!

Mani Ratnam has always chosen to thread his films around situations, characters and incidents that are part of our lives or beliefs. Perhaps, that is what makes them as fascinating as they turn out to be. In the last 20 years or so, there are perhaps only 2-3 Mani Ratnam films that have not been inspired by real life personalities, incidents or mythology. They are Thiruda Thiruda, Alai Paayuthe and Ayutha Ezhuthu. Of course, Ayutha Ezhuthu did have a lot of social relevance and drew a lot from the political scenario of our country. But, it was still primarily a work of fiction. If so, even Dil Se and Roja can be said to be works of fiction rather than being inspired from the psyche of a terrorist and hostage and his wife respectively.

But, the fact remains that Mani Ratnam hardly ever constructs films that cannot be related to our lives and beliefs at some level. Some of his best works have come, while drawing inspiration from real life. Nayagan, inspired from the life of Varadaraja Mudaliar is arguably the finest Mani Ratnam film ever. There has however been gossip or talk that Mani Ratnam himself considers Iruvar to be his best work and the source of Iruvar’s inspiration is no secret to anyone in Tamil Nadu.

Gurukanth Desai was an adaptation of one of the greatest businessmen modern India has seen, the one we experienced in Guru.

The best part of Mani Ratnam adaptations of real life incidents and personalities is that he does not take sides. He chooses neither to glorify nor run down the subject of his inspiration. He shows them – strengths, weaknesses, perfections, flaws and all. We saw this in Guru, Iruvar, and Nayagan. Mani Ratnam was always willing to project his protagonist as just a normal human being who could go wrong and that is what sets him apart as a film maker. His protagonist is as likely to be greedy, corrupt and unscrupulous as he is to be benevolent and righteous. Even when he portrayed a love story in Alai Payudhe he chose to show not just the mushy and romantic part, he depicted what can go wrong even with a newly married couple. He does not paint rosy pictures of life, he shows it, warts and all, which is why we connect to it. The only film in the recent past where his protagonists were absolutely squeaky clean characters is Aayudha Ezhuthu and most of you will admit that it was one of his lesser effective films.

Even more interesting is his adaptation of the great Indian epics. How he adapted a segment of the Mahabharatha to make Thalapathi is well known. Now, he gets ready to reveal his take on the other great Indian epic, the Ramayana. Though he has not admitted it openly (he seldom does, even with Guru he never said that it was based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani), we can gauge from the title and trailers what it is all about. Now, how has he chosen to depict some of the most revered character in Indian mythology?

That he has chosen to adapt the Ramayana and named the movie Raavanan is proof enough of his guts. This is definitely bound to be a different perspective of the Ramayana, one that delves deeper into the psyche of the 10 headed asura who has captured the imagination of many people. In fact, there exist a few views which say that Raavanan was in fact one of the most multi-faceted personalities in the Ramayana. An Asura who was a Brahman by birth, a great scholar, musician and one who had acquired a boon from Lord Brahma and the divine sword (Chandrahas) from Lord Shiva himself.

Perhaps, Raavanan is a film that goes along this perspective, a film that will bring out the lesser known perspective of Raavanan. It did require a film maker of Mani Ratnam’s caliber and courage to go in for such a daring interpretation of an epic so deeply ingrained into the Indian psyche.

Is our guess right? Let’s wait and see.

Usure Poyene Promo From Villain

Katta Katta Song Promo : Raavan

Last Friday was disappointing for film buffs

With 6 films hitting screens on last Friday (May 21), the entire town was brimming with excitement to keep their weekends occupied. Regrettably, none of the films did really gratify the audiences’ tastes as most of the turned to be mere disappointments.

Srikanth-Prithviraj starrer Kutrappirivu had a poor opening and is still struggling to prove itself as an average grosser while Magane En Marumagane has received some good reports amongst B and C centres across suburb regions. Arun Vijay’s Maanja Velu has been adjudged as a typical Andhra based commercial film that in no way savored to the tastes of audiences.

The only film that has incredulously exceeded our expectations is director Madhumitha’s Kola Kolaya Mundhrika as it has been receiving good feedbacks across all the centres in multiplex, single screens and other regions.

Meanwhile, Hrithik Roshan’s international film Kites had a grand opening with many multiplexes introducing paid reviews on Thursday night itself. Apparently, majority of the audiences seems to have been disappointed after watching the film as they didn’t find uniquely exceptional except Hrithik Roshan’s charismatic appeal.

Well, the entire state is curiously looking out for the upcoming releases Singam, Raavanan and few more big tickets yet to be scheduled for release in June and July.

Abhishek’s Raavan vs. Vikram’s Raavanan

It’s already known that Mani Ratnam’s forthcoming film will be released in Hindi and Tamil versions. While Abhishek Bachchan will play Raavan in the Hindi film, Chiyan Vikram will play the same role in the Tamil version, ‘Raavanan’.

Interestingly, apart from the same role that both the actors are playing, one can also spot similarities between their look and the scenes from the film. Indiatimes Movies presents a pictorial dekko into both the Hindi and Tamil versions. Take a look and tell us which actor do you think suits the role better.

Vikram and Abhishek both will have some interesting scenes with the beautiful Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Now it remains to be seen if the husband-wife chemistry in ‘Raavan’ or the Vikram-Ash chemistry in ‘Raavanan’ wins.

Abhishek Bachchan and Chiyan Vikram in a song from Hindi ‘Raavan’ and Tamil ‘Raavanan’.

Vikram plays ‘Raavan’ in the Tamil version of the film but plays Ram in the Hindi version. In the above pictures, Vikram romances Aishwarya as Ram in Bollywood version, while South actor Prithviraj takes on the same role in ‘Raavanan’.

Coming up

Amal Neerad’s ‘Anwar'. I play a Muslim girl in the film that gives the message not all Muslims are terrorists. This is Amal’s third film and my second with him after ‘Big B'. Tamil actor Prakash Raj has a prominent role in the film. ‘Anwar’ is scheduled for a July release. Then there is Deepan’s (of ‘Puthiya Mukham’ fame) ‘Singaravelan’ with me and Prithviraj in the lead. In Tamil, I’m now shooting for director Amir’s ‘Aadi Bhagavan’ opposite Jayam Ravi.

Prithviraj is one of the hottest youngsters we have in the industry now. He’s great to work with. He has groomed himself so well over the years. His confidence is impressive.

WHY MANI RATNAM DID NOT GET THE TITLE?

Movie buffs were puzzled over Mani Ratnam’s decision in naming his Ravan as Villain in Telugu. It may be noted that the Tamil version is named Raavanan and naturally it was expected that the film be titled Raavanudu in Telugu.

Mani has a reason to name it as Villain. Yes, that’s because the title has been registered by filmmaker Dasari Narayan Rao and he was not willing to part with it, we hear. So, Mani had to be content with Villain.

Raavanan is a trilingual film that has Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Prithviraj and Priyamani playing the lead roles. The movie will hit the silver screens in June.

Maniratnam's RAAVAN / RAAVANAN will not release in Kerala on June 18 !!

In a shocking development, Film Distributors Association Kerala (FDAK) has issued an “unofficial order” to cinema theatres in Kerala not to screen Other Language Films (OLF) like Tamil, English and Hindi simultaneously with the rest of the world!

Last Friday (May 21), Hrithik Roshan’s big budget Hindi film Kites which was to release in 45 screens in Kerala, could be screened only in 18 screens. Earlier the distributor of Vijay’s Sura, Shibu of Tameens Films who went against the order of FDAK and released the film simultaneously, was issued a ‘Red Card’ and not allowed to function.

More shocking is that distributors and producers want a crackdown on other language films (OLF) like Tamil, English and Hindi films which have eaten into the collections of Malayalam films. Says Siyad Kokker, president of FDAK: “We have made it clear that OLF can release in Kerala only two weeks after its worldwide release. The theatres are not interested in promoting Malayalam films, which is finding it difficult to get proper release.”

Reliance Big Pictures the distributors of Kites in Kerala has now been blacklisted. FDAK is all out to see that Mani Ratnam’s Raavan in Hindi and Raavanan in Tamil which was being planned for a 100 screen release on June 18 by Reliance does not get the theatres.

Shibu who was to distribute Suriya’sSingam in Kerala has backed out and Ravi of Divya Pictures has stepped in to distribute the film in Kerala. Ravi, a veteran distributor of Tamil films has been warned by FDAK, and he is yet to start booking theatres for the film releasing on May 28.

Bips has no issues with Ash

Bipasha Basu lost her role in Raavan as Mandodari (Raavan’s wife in the Ramayan) because the starcast is already top heavy.

Check this out: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (Sita), South superstar Vikram (Ram), Abhishek Bachchan (Raavan); National Award winner Priya Mani (Shoorpankha), Govinda (Hanuman) etc.

TOI was the first to report that Bips was actually ready with costume and almost getting into her car to drive to Malshej, when she got unceremoniously dumped because it took the creative team that long to decide whether she should drive to the location or not. However, there are websites and papers still writing about Bips being dropped because certain members of the cast were threatened by her dominating screen presence. Now that isn’t true. Honestly, wish people would just let some matters ride.

Ash and Bips shared great vibes during Dhoom-2 and they are quite civil with each other. Bips is doing Dum Maro Dum that has Abhishek in the lead and though Bips is cast with Rana Dagubatti, she and AB Junior get along famously. So who is arriving at all these theories one wonders?

Pokkiri Raja now running successfully in Chennai

Prithviraj with Fans [OLD]

Top five movies

After three weeks of turmoil and controversies, Mollywood Box office finally landed back to peace with the release of a few movies on the 6th of this month. All the fresh releases have succeeded in bringing back the viewers to theaters. The top five movies of the week are listed below:

1. Pokkiri Raja - This double bonanza offer featuring Mammootty and Prithviraj in equally important roles, has been taken up with good spirits by the audience. The stylish, loud and colourful movie from debutant Vysakh with plenty of mass masala ingredients is said to have found success mainly due to its balanced placement of heroism of the two big heroes, though in out of proportions. The movie has already raked in a share of 3.64 crores from its two weeks run. The movie continues with seventy-eighty percent collections in almost all centers, while the metros still register a hundred percent collections.

2. Katha Thudarum - The Sathyan Anthikkad movie as usual went by a slow start, but by the week two shows signs of picking up with good number of families coming up to support their family director. The first weekend had the producer share of 1.26 crores, while the second weekend is also expected to repeat the same in collections. The movie passes on with a 60-70 percent collections and is expected to break even with this week.

3. Pappy Appacha - As the movie is nearing fifty days, this Dileep- Kavya starrer fares better than any of the recent Dileep movies. It has already managed to break even and is on the way of becoming a super hit. The colourful songs and the camaraderie of the lead pair has worked in favour of this movie by debutant Mamas. The movie is continuing in 26 centres in its sixth week.

4. In Ghost House Inn - Director Lal's sequel to ‘Harihar Nagar’ is faring well even during the rainy season. The movie continues in metros and towns with satisfying collections.
