The Prithiviraj starrer 'Anwar', released last week, is doing well and the initial collections are reported to be 'very good', its director Amal Neerad said today. Neerad, who made his directorial debut with the hit-movie Mammootty-starrer 'Big B', said the film had taken about 70 days for completion. The film was released at 130 centres including eight theatres in Mumbai, four at Chennai and five/six theatres at Bangalore, Neerad, who was also the movie's cinematographer, told a meet-the-press programme. Prithviraj in ‘Season’ remake

There is one more film being added to the remake list of Prithviraj. The young superstar of Mollywood will replay the role Jeevan lived by Mohanlal in the remake of the 1989 film 'Season', written and directed by the late P. Padmarajan.

The movie portrayed the of drug mafia in the beaches of Kovalam. Mohanlal played an innocent trader selling foreign goods in the beaches. He is falsely framed for three murders, including that of his two friends who is actually killed by the drug mafia.

Though the movie was not a hit at the box office, the sensitive portrayal of the lead character by Mohanlal was well appreciated. Padmarajan's realistic story-telling style also came for praises. All hope the changed times would do justice to the story now.

Anwar is Entertaining : Sify Review

Director Amal Neerad’s Anwar is an engaging film that makes a definite impact on the viewer. With its technical brilliance, brisk pace, good music and some fine performances, it is capable enough to take you to a different world. It may be far from perfect especially with a rather average script but such things barely come to your mind while watching it.

It is perhaps difficult to explain the storyline, without giving away too much about the film or its suspense. Anwar (Prithviraj) is a hot blooded youth who falls pretty easily into the charming theories of Babu Sait (Lal), a rich man who finds it quite normal to help the terrorists, in the name of religion.

The two meet in jail and soon Anwar becomes his trusted henchman, as Babu Sait plans to conduct several terrorist attacks and bomb blasts. All along, the brilliant anti-terrorist cop Stalin Manimaran (Prakash Raj) is in pursuit of the criminals. Mamta Mohandas plays Ayesha, who is nabbed the police, after they find certain aspects that links her to a bomb blast.

Amal Neerad, who had depended only on technical wizardry for his earlier films like Big B and Sagar Alias Jackie- Reloaded, has come up with a decent storyline here. Of course, the inspiration from Jeffrey Nachmanoff’s Traitor is evident at times. Satheesh Kurup’s visuals and Gopi Sundar’s music are among the highlights of the film.

Prithviraj, who looks really handsome, has done a brilliant job as Anwar. He has long been acknowledged as the next best thing of Malayalam cinema and he shows why such assumptions are relevant. Prakash Raj and Lal may not have too many scenes but the actors have shown their credentials in an excellent way even then. Mamta mainly has to look beautiful and that, she does in style. The rest of the cast have also performed quite well.

With some fine moments, Anwar qualifies as an engrossing entertainer. It may be far from being perfect with too many ‘cinematic liberties’ to boost the hero and things could have been better with a tighter script. But even in the current form, the movie succeeds in shaking the viewer up with its merits. Watch this one!

Verdict: Entertaining

Anwar impresses : Rediff.com

Amal Neerad, cinematographer-turned-director started his career with Ram Gopal Varma's Factory. He then wielded the camera for Ranjith's Black. He went on to direct Big B with Mammootty and Sagar Alias Jackie Reloaded with Mohanlal. Now with his new Malayalam venture Anwar, starring Prithviraj, he proves that his earlier ventures were not flukes.

The backdrop of this film is topical. It's about how the youth of God's own country are recruited by terror modules. The script is filled with recent events that are sure to give you a sense of deja vu. There are punchlines but the slapdash style is kept to a minimum.

Anwar (Prithviraj) is an orphan serving a jail term for money laundering. In jail he meets Babu Sait (Lal), a religious leader cum businessman accused of masterminding a bomb blast in Coimbatore. He slowly takes Anwar under his wings and even arranges for his bail. Then, as expected, Anwar becomes Sait's right hand man playing an important part in carrying out Sait's illicit businesses and even planting explosives in a couple of places.

Among those arrested with him is a young lady Ayesha (Mamta Mohandas) who was working in a chemical factory and is suspected to have provided the raw material for the explosives used in the Coimbatore blast.

The anti-terrorist squad chief of Tamil Nadu police, Stalin Manimaran (Prakash Raj), who had initially arrested Sait and his gang, is still trailing them. Any further unravelling of the story would be a spoiler.

It is interesting if not ingenious how Amal ties all the material together to give us a cohesive ending. It seems to pass of in a jiffy compared to the other parts of the story. The suspense and the tension too seem to have been watered down in the climax. But, that is a small glitch compared to overall impact the film leaves.

Prithviraj as Anwar is good while Mamta Mohandas as Ayesha appears and vanishes a few times in the first half. But, the significance of her character comes to the fore only in the second half. She has a riveting presence for whatever time she gets on the screen. Prakash Raj is effortless as a beedi-smoking investigating officer while Lal is subdued as Babu Sait. They both leave an impact, though.

All in all, the movie impresses. Go for it.

ANWAR has made more money than films like Endhiran

Njan Song

Kavithapol Song

Writer-director Amal Neerad has every reason to feel deliriously happy, as his latest Malayalam release Anwar has begun its run with whopping initials.

The film starring Prithviraj, Prakash Raj and Mamta Mohandas handles the sensitive issue of Islamic terrorism. The director has succeeded in packaging it as a highly engrossing film.

In a candid interview, exclusively for rediff.com, Amal talks about Anwar and more. Excerpts:

Anwar had one of the best initial collections in Malayalam ever. Were you expecting such a response?
Anwar has made more money than films like Endhiran did on the first day in Kerala. Of course, we did expect a good opening considering the expectations that the viewers had about a film starring Prithviraj as the hero and me as the director.

But then Anwar, which is a commercial entertainer, had to compete with the likes of Endhiran which was reportedly made with an Rs 162 crore budget. Imagine, we have spent almost Rs 158 crore less [smiles]. But the response has been nothing less than fabulous. The reports from every centre including remote centers have been fantastic.

How did you come up with Anwar?
The basic idea came to me during the September 11 attacks in the US. Later, such things affected us all much more when the Mumbai attacks happened. I thought of the innocent victims. That is how Anwar came about.

How different is Anwar from your earlier films Big B and Sagar Alias Jackie-Reloaded?
The earlier two were "cinema-cinemas", while Anwar is more realistic [laughs]. Now I don't know if that is a convincing answer to your question.

Does that mean Anwar has a more genuine storyline?
See, we have been going behind the so-called films with storylines and may be due to the great focus on that, the young generation refuses to go to the theatres to watch conventional dramas. Instead, they have shifted their attention to other languages. What I am saying is as important as how I am saying it. I agree that some part of the storyline here has been dealt with in the past in various other films like Infernal Affairs, The Departed, Traitor, Sathya or Pokkiri.

Some say Anwar has been inspired by Traitor?Frankly, I hadn't even seen Traitor when I went to meet Prithviraj for the first time with the story idea of Anwar. I thought of the plot when I saw Ram Gopal Varma's film Sathya. The protagonist, Sathya, goes to jail and comes out as Don Bhiku Mhatre's confidant. In the story, Sathya's past events in his life has not been dealt with. But I tried to make a story out of it.

Like, what if he had a secret enmity with Bhiku and while joining his gang, actually his aim was to take on the don as well. These thoughts were in my mind while the story of Anwar was being developed. In that way, the story could have been inspired from films like Sathya or Pokkiri more than Traitor [smiles].

How different was the experience of directing the three big stars of Malayalam cinema -- Mammootty, Mohanlal and Prithviraj -- in your three films? All three are brilliant actors. Mammootty and Mohanlal are legends already and Prithviraj is, let's say, a legend in the making. Even at this young age, he is hugely experienced and successful.

It was wonderful working with Mammootty and Mohanlal. Since Prithviraj is a youngster, working with him was even easier as I could vibe really well and make him work harder [laughs].

Looks like Anwar is going to be a super hit going by the initial responses to it. How do you feel?
Obviously, I am delighted. Everyone says this is my best film and I feel happy to hear that as well.

There have been talks that Prakash Raj had a rather brief role in the film. Was the character conceived so originally?
Yes, it was written in this way itself. In fact that is the reason why we wanted Prakash Raj to do the role. It is only because Prakash Raj is doing it that the character creates the impact that we wanted. He has done a brilliant job in Anwar.

Have you started thinking about your next film?
Let me sit back and watch the response to Anwar for now. I will think about my next film some time later.

Rai calls twin Hindi-Tamil films tough challenge

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan participate in "Open Talks" during the 15th Pusan International Film Festival in Busan, South Korea, Friday, Oct. 8, 2010.

BUSAN, South Korea — Indian superstar Aishwarya Rai says shooting two versions of the same movie simultaneously on a recent set posed the toughest challenge of her career. Promoting the twin releases "Raavan" and "Raavanan" at South Korea's Pusan International Film Festival, the actress reflected on the unique experiment in Indian cinema. Attempting to reach out to speakers of both Hindi and Tamil, veteran director Mani Ratnam shot each scene once in each dialect based on the same story of a police officer whose wife is abducted by gangsters.

Adding to the challenge, Ratnam tweaked the cast for the two versions. While Rai appears in both, her husband Abhishek Bachchan skips the Tamil production. Tamil star Chiyaan Vikram takes on different roles in the two movies.

"I must say this is by far the most challenging experience of my career," Rai told a news conference Friday.

Rai said it was difficult to capture the same chemistry for the same scene twice.

"The thing about cinema is it's not about the number of takes that you take to get the right shot, but it's about all elements coming together. ... When that magic happens, you know you've got it. And then immediately you've got to go again because the light can change, the conditions can change," she said.

Rai added it was a physically taxing shoot that involved filming in heavy rain in the jungle.

"It was demanding. It was challenging — but creatively extremely satisfying. It was a high," she said.

The actors raved about the reception they received in Pusan, with Bachchan noting with delight that they were asked a question by a South Korean fan in Hindi.

"When you say anything, they go 'ooh' and 'ahh.' It's so nice because they feel so much and they are able to express it. As artists, you want to reach the audience. You want to have a rapport with the audience. There's nothing more wonderful than actually standing on stage and having such an appreciative audience," Vikram said.

(PIFF) Indian cinema tapping into world on tradition : director

Indian cinema preserves the country's strong oral tradition that uses music to express emotions, and that indigenous quality sets apart and enables Bollywood to move the international audience, veteran Indian director Mani Ratnam said Friday.

Promoting his latest film "Raavan" during the Pusan International Film Festival, Ratnam said his film, now internationally distributed, is "just a small step" forward to the world market.

"I think what's special about Indian cinema is that it still remains Indian cinema, it is not totally 'Hollywood-ized,'" Ratnam said at a press conference.

Indian music that has passed on through generations gives filmmakers broader leeway to express emotions than just stick to drama, he said.

"I think it might be little alien for somebody outside, but for a filmmaker it is a tremendous advantage to have ... You have this wonderful opportunity to be able to go abstract, to convert to something very emotional and to an abstract form and then come back to the logical direction again. So it just gives you freedom not to be restricted to a very strict dramatic form," Ratnam said.

Starring Bollywood darling and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai, her husband Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram, "Raavan" tells the story of an outlaw who abducts the wife of a police officer to teach him a lesson. While hiding in a nearby jungle, the two fall in love - but the story has a dramatic twist and carries a subtle theme to the end.

Bachchan, the son of major Indian actors who plays the lead character in the Hindi version, recognized Indian cinema's growing prowess on the world stage, but said the issue is not about domination.

"To think, one out of six people in the world is Indian, I think we are pretty globalized," he said with a grin. "But I don't think the question is about global domination. It's about taking your work and getting it shown to as many people as possible, who would believe that it's something worth watching."

"Raavan" was produced in two versions -- first in the director's native Tamil, then in the national language Hindi in the name of "Raavanan." It is said to be one of the first Indian movies to be distributed globally.
The versions were shot simultaneously, forcing the actors to dive from a cliff, stay under a waterfall for hours and withstand snakes in jungles. Rai and Vikram, who star in both films, said they were emotionally and physically challenged.

"It was the most challenging experience of my career," Rai said. Cinema is "about the right emotions. It's about all elements coming together. When the magic happens you know you got it, and immediately you've got to go again ... We want to capture the magical moments again with another set of actors."
