Ravan in May

Mani Ratnam’s much awaited film Ravan was scheduled to release in February, but now the date has been advanced to May. The reasons for this are not known. Ravan is a new take on the Ramayan where Sita questions Ram’s intention of doubting her integrity. A twist in the story is that Sita decides to stay with Ravan at the end.

Vikram is the lead in the Tamil version where as Abhishek Bachchan is the lead in the Hindi version. Priyamani and Aishwarya Rai play the female cast in both the versions. The film has music by A R Rehman.

Ravan has been extensively shot in the jungles of south India and the film would mark the entry of Priyamani into Bollywood. The expectations from the film are high!

Anwar to lack star power

Director Amal Neerad has clearly stated that his upcoming film, Anwar, will lack the starry presence that his earlier films were full of.

He spoke about how his previous films starred Malayalam superstars, Mohanlal and Mammootty. However, Anwar will be different.

According to him, Anwar will focus more on the characters in the film than the star playing it. The film is a take on the emotional aspect of terrorism. It also tries to determine the right and the wrong of it all.

Starring young actor Prithviraj, Amal will be scripting it himself. It will go on floors in March at Kochi and Bangalore and will be ready for release by July.

Raavana for summer

Mani Ratnam’s bilingual movie ‘Raavana’ is almost ready and the film has moved into final editing stage. More than 70% of the dubbing is also over. Some final shots for patch work involving Vikram are happening in the jungles near Pollachi.

With the film just about to be completed Mani Ratnam is planning for a simultaneous release in May for both the Hindi and Tamil versions.

But what is still not decided is the title for the Tamil version. It appears that he is in two minds whether to call the Tamil version also ‘Raavan’, In fact when the film was first announced ‘Ashokavanam’ was said to be the Tamil title. ‘Ashokavanam’ sounds good even today.

‘Raavan’ has a sterling star cast with Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai- Vikram for Hindi and Vikram-Aishwarya Rai-Prithviraj for Tamil.

Rahman’S Goes Nostalgic For ‘Raavan’

Nothing turns to be as important for Rahman as his first preferences are always for Manirathnam. The ace filmmaker has been graceful over introducing Rahman into tinsel town and today as a world renowned figure.

In spite of fetching so many Hollywood offers, the music director has flown down to Chennai for one particular reason. It’s all about background score and rerecording session of Manirathnam’s bilingual film ‘Raavana’ in Hindi and Tamil.

Manirathnam has almost completed shooting for the film with the final phase yet to be filmed. Soon after the complete of musical session, A.R. Rahman will fly back to United States pertaining to discussions for international projects….

Moneybags think Kites better than Mani's film

Everyone was eagerly waiting to see a war at the box office between Abhishek Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan. But it is not to be. Abhishek's Raavan and Hrithik's Kites were expected to be released at the same time. But now, Raavan director Mani Ratnam seems to have lost out to the maker of Kites.

Mani wanted to release his film Raavan on May 21, the same day when Kites was to be released. The film starring Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is one of the most awaited films of the year.

But then again, another film in the most awaited list happens to be Kites, which stars the hot Barbara Mori along with Hrithik.

So, Big Pictures - which has the rights for both films - decided to release one of the films on May 21 and the other on June 18.

These dates had been allotted according to the agreement between film producers last year after ending the multiplex impasse.

But Mani's film did not figure in their priority list and they allotted the first date to Rakesh Roshan for Kites . Mani isn't happy at all about this and made his anger felt to the top bosses at Big Pictures.

But at the end, it is the buyer who calls the shots. They have paid for the film and will release it at the right moment and have decided not to put their money on Mani first.

Ash has a good sense for music: Shobana

She was last here in Kolkata to choreograph Aishwarya rai bachchan for Ravana. In town for her Kolkata festival performance tonight, Shobana talks to CT about dance, choreography and the Padma awards controversy.
.
You’ve last been to Kolkata for the shooting of Ravana. How difficult/easy is it for an actor to choreograph another?
It’s as difficult as it’s being easy! As a choreographer, one doesn’t go to the sets with an actor in mind or with only the actors in mind. Choreographing for films is not only about the movements. It’s about the song in its entirety. It’s about situations, the mood of the music, the sections of the music and being in total sync with the director (who here is hands on). Mr Mani Ratnam can shoot songs without a choreographer as well. Aishwarya has a very good sense for music. She catches the details of the music like a musician and hence, it was motivating for me. I could go to the sets as the choreographer and not as an actor. Being the thorough professional that she is, she didn’t mind me pushing the boundaries. All actors need to be motivated on the sets and I know that. I would perish if I had a choreographer who would come to the sets and throw her weight around and keep barking out orders!
.
Are you open to the idea of choreographing for directors other than Mani Ratnam?
No.
