Not many writers in Mollywood, or rather, the Indian film industry as whole, were as successful and popular as Renji Panicker in the '90s. Known for his fire-spitting dialogues and bold offensives on social evils, Renji debuted in films with 'Dr Pasupathy' in 1992. The unfancied film, directed by a struggling newcomer Shaji Kailas, became a superhit and paved way for one of the most popular writer-director combinations in the history of Malayalam cinema.
With Suresh Gopi as the third member, the 'Trinity' made superhits one after the other: From 'Thalasthanam' to 'Mafia' and from 'Ekalavyan' to 'Commissioner'. After 'King', he parted ways with Shaji and debuted as a director with 'Bharath Chandran IPS'.
Now, Renji Panicker is busy writing two scripts--a biopic on Veluthampi Dalava and 'King and Commissioner'.
Here are some excerpts from the interview:
It was reported that in 'King and Commissioner', you have replaced Suresh Gopi with Prithviraj in the role of the commissioner...
There is no truth in the report. The film is about two different officers. And, for your information, Prithviraj is not playing Bharathchandran IPS, the role Suresh Gopi had played in 'Commissioner'.
We know that Mammootty is playing an IAS officer and Raju, an IPS man. What are the kind of characters they play? Do they fight corruption together or fight each other?
I cannot give you any details about them as it is being written.
Who produces the movie, when will it go on floors?
Anto Joseph. 'King and Commissioner' will kickstart in January next.
A little about Veluthampi Dalava...
As you know, Prithviraj will be playing the title role. Viji Thampi is the director. The film will get underway in a couple of months.
Has the script been completed?
Well, it is going on. There is some research to be done as well.
Will the period film strive to give a different interpretation to known history a la 'Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha'?
No, the film will be based on known history and records; expect a small dose of fiction also.
