Is Vidya Balan going to do an item number in Santosh Sivan’s Urumi, that’ll be done in Malayalam, Tamil and English?
The grapevine is abuzz that Santosh met Vidya and narrated the scene in which she makes a cameo. We hear that the beautiful actress was bowled over by her role and has given the green signal to the ace cinematographer-turned-director.
A little bird informs us that the scene is quite unlike the usual item number routinely featured in commercial films. Vidya will do a traditional Mohiniattam dance and that, we hear, will be shot in a very artistic and sensuous manner. Vidya trusts Santosh, who has made Aishwarya Rai (Iruvar and Raavan) and Kareena Kapoor (Asoka) look even more beautiful on screen.
Santosh feels that Vidya has the “best Indian look and is a classical beauty.” He also played out all the six songs recorded for Urumi by Deepak Dev, who once worked with A R Rahman. Vidya fell in love with the songs, especially the Mohiniattam number. Santosh is also a good friend of Sabyasachi, the famous designer (Raavan), who is also Vidya’s favourite designer.
Urumi, with the tag line — The Boy who wanted to kill Vasco Da Gama, is a period film set in the 15th century. It is about four youths who plan to kill Vasco Da Gama, the Portugese trader who came to Kozhikode and wanted to colonize India. The film is already one of the biggest multi-starrers, with Prithviraj, Prabhu Deva, Genelia, Nithya Menon, Chandan Roy Sanyal and Amol Gupte featured among others.
However, when contacted, Santosh says, “I have no comments to make at the moment, other than saying that we are talking to Vidya. We will finalise the star cast closer to the shoot.” Urumi will be shot in the forest areas of Malshej Ghat, Maharashtra, and the Malabar Coast. Santosh Sivan and Prithviraj are jointly producing the film, which will be premiered at an international festival next summer.
