Santosh Sivan's love for history was evident in his 'Asoka', which starred Shah Rukh Khan in the title role.
Recently, he has become a hero with 'Makara Manju', a period film on the life of renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma (He plays the legendary artist!). His love for things with a touch of history can be seen in the way he crafts his frames. Just think of the romantic glow his visuals irradiate in 'Perunthachan'.
The camera artist, who loves to recreate times of yore, is back with another period film, 'Urumi'. The film revisits a turbulent time in the history of Kerala in the early part of 16th century. The land had become a hotbed of discontent and rage following the cruel deeds of Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama.
Santosh Sivan said that he was making 'Urumi' on the lines of a ballad. It is about a small group of warriors who had the audacity of spirit and will power to take on the might of money-rich traders and their private armies, he explained. He was speaking in an interview to a national daily.
Santosh says that though the Malabar coast had been in touch with several foreign traders for centuries, they had never faced a situation similar to the one brought about by Gama's arrival. His acts fuelled a cataclysmic change in the socio-political situation. The movie is set in such a period when Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar and his band of men decide to send Gama to his death. The film is set in the period between 1502 and 1524. The movie is about the repercussions of his journey in world history.
The multilingual film has a pan Indian cast: They include Prithviraj, Tabu, Genelia D'Souza, Prabhu Deva and Amol. The shooting for the film is progressing at Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra. Deepak Dev has scored the music.
