Prithviraj to Portray Mohd Abdul Rahman Sahib in Film

Malayalam actor Prithviraj will essay the role of prominent freedom fighter and Congress leader Mohammed Abdul Rahman Sahib in P T Kunju Muhammed's film VeeraPutran, shooting of which will start by November 2010.

Addressing a press conference here to announce the launch of the project, P T Kunju Muhammed, writer and a former MLA with Left leanings said this would be a commercial film based on the life and times of Rahman Sahib, considered a secular politician of India.

The film would traverse Sahib's life and his struggle in the freedom movement. Sahib had discontinued studies at Aligarh Muslim university to participate in the non-cooperation movement and Khilafat movement. His efforts to bring peace during the Moplah riots of 1921, imprisonment in 1921 and participation in the salt satyagraha in 1930 would all be featured in the film, he said.

Sahib was elected President of Kerala PCC and was a member of All India Congress in 1939. He died on November 22, 1945 after addressing a public meeting.

Describing Veeraputran as a commercial film with art, romance and suspense thrown in, Prithviraj said the film was a story of a revolutionary, who is a protagonist.

The actor said he had done lot of research to get the feel of the character he would portray.

Prithviraj, who returned this morning after the UK premiere of Mani Ratnam's Ravaan in which he stars opposite Aishwarya Rai in the Tamil version, said the response to the blockbuster was 'funtastic'.

Asked whether with his Left leanings he would be able to do justice to the film, Kunju Muhammed said his duty was to make films. 'Your duty is to make controversies', he said, amidst laughter. Sahib was a material for any artist, he said.

Leaders like E M S Namboodiripad would be among those who would be portrayed in the film, he said.

Prithviraj, a busy actor in Malayalam and Tamil films, would portray another historical character 'Velu Thampi Dalawa', Diwan of erstwhile Travancore state. The film's script is by Ranji Panicker and directed by Viji Thampy.
