Prithviraj at Raavan World Premiere, London

There’s something more striking about actor Prithviraj than just his good looks and acting skills.

Observe closely and you realise that he has got his priorities in order, something for which a man would need clarity of thought. A brief chat with him and your faith in his thinking abilities only gets strengthened.

The man is known for his sterling performances in several films. However, for his fans, his heart-stealing performances in Mozhi and Saththam Podathey in Tamil (though he spoke the language with a heavy Malayalam accent in both) top the list. But now, that list might soon change. For, if his confidence is any indication, Prithviraj might just have saved his best for Mani Ratnam’s Raavanan, which is releasing this week.

“Raavanan is the biggest film that Mani sir has done. Not just in terms of the budget but also in terms of the emotional canvas,” he begins and goes on to add, “Fix any two points in the film, A and B. The journey from point A to point B will take you through a hundred different emotional areas. Also, although the film itself happens within a short span of time, what happens within every character is really big. That’s the reason I say it is the biggest in terms of the emotional canvas as well.”

Everybody cherishes the experience of working with the ace director for different reasons. Most learn something from Mani Ratnam. What did Prithvi learn? “Oh, I learnt the process of unlearning something I had learnt, to learn something new.”

But what exactly did he unlearn and more importantly, learn? “I can’t be specific. But a lot of things regarding falling into comfort zones has changed. When you do more and more films, you tend to nurture the idea, ‘This is how you do that and that is how you do this.’ Then, you come across a Mani Ratnam and you realise that that can also be done this way and this can also be done that way. In that context, it has been an eye-opening exercise for several actors.”

Prod him for details on his role in the film and he very diplomatically states with a smile, “I can’t tell you much. But what I can tell you is that the film mostly revolves around three characters and I play one of the characters. You can look at this film from each one of these three perspectives. What’s interesting about the film is that you tend to make a choice as to from whose side you want to look at the film. That’s how the screenplay has been written. It’s up to the viewer to pick a perspective.”
